Start With a Simple Boys Bedroom Color Palette

One of my biggest tips when decorating a boy’s bedroom is to keep the main pieces relatively simple.

You can absolutely create a sports-themed bedroom without buying a football bed, football dresser, football lamps, football curtains, football sheets AND football wall art.

In fact, I think boys’ rooms often look better when you don’t.

Start with a neutral base and then layer in the fun pieces.

Some of my favorite colors for a boys bedroom are:

• Navy blue
• Medium blue
• Light blue
• Gray
• Cream

• Tan
• Olive or hunter green
• Black accents
• Natural wood

These colors work beautifully with sports decor, but they also make it easy to change the room later when your little football player suddenly decides that baseball, hockey, fishing, airplanes, or something entirely different is his new favorite thing.

Add One Really Fun Piece

Sometimes one whimsical piece does more for a child’s bedroom than an entire coordinated bedroom set.

I love the idea of putting a football rug beside his bed so it is one of the first things he sees when he gets up in the morning.

Create a Sports Bedroom Without Making Everything Match

There was definitely a time when children’s bedrooms were decorated by buying one giant matching bedding set.

You would get the comforter, pillow shams, sheets, curtains, lamp and probably a wastebasket that all had exactly the same print.

You really don’t have to do that anymore.

Instead, mixing pieces makes a bedroom feel much more collected and interesting.

Look for old-looking football signs, pennants, framed stadium prints, vintage team logos or black-and-white sports photographs.

You can often find these inexpensively at antique stores, thrift stores, flea markets, Facebook Marketplace and even garage sales.

A collection of pennants above the bed would be adorable.

You could also frame an old football program, a favorite team poster or even your child’s own jersey.

Personal pieces almost always make a child’s room feel better than simply buying a complete room of decorations from a store.

Display His Own Sports Gear

Some of the cutest boys bedroom decor might already be sitting in your garage.

If your son plays football, basketball, baseball, hockey or another sport, consider incorporating some of his actual equipment into the room.

If there is one thing I have learned about boys’ rooms, it is that you can almost never have too many hooks.

Hooks give backpacks, hats, sweatshirts and sports equipment somewhere to go besides the floor.

Put a row of sturdy hooks behind the bedroom door or along an empty wall.

You can even create a small locker-room-inspired section with hooks and a bench underneath.

And realistically, the easier you make it for a child to put something away, the greater the chance that it might actually happen.

Might.

Use Baskets for the Things Boys Collect

Boys have stuff.

So much stuff.

Balls.

Trading cards.

LEGO.

Sports gear.

Random rocks.

Three sticks that are apparently extremely important.

A plastic creature whose identity nobody knows.

Fourteen tiny pieces of something that absolutely cannot be thrown away.

Instead of trying to organize every single object into a tiny labeled container, give him some larger baskets or bins.

A few big baskets on a shelf can hide an enormous amount of little-boy clutter while still making cleanup manageable.

Add a Comfortable Reading Spot

Even in a sports-themed boys bedroom, I love including someplace comfortable to read.

It doesn’t have to be complicated.

A beanbag chair, floor cushion or comfortable chair in the corner works perfectly.

Add a small basket of books beside it and suddenly there is a little reading nook.

Make the Room Easy to Clean

This may not be the most exciting decorating advice, but it might be the most useful.

When decorating a child’s bedroom, think about how easy the room will be to maintain.

Try not to fill every surface.

Leave some open floor space.

Give everything a reasonably obvious home.

Use baskets.

Use hooks.

Use drawers.

And resist the temptation to cover every horizontal surface with decor.

Children need room to actually LIVE in their bedrooms.

They need someplace to build LEGO, read comic books, toss a football onto the bed, play with friends and spread out whatever enormous project they suddenly decide to begin five minutes before bedtime.

Let Him Help Decorate

This might be the most important part.

Let him have an opinion.

His choices may not always be exactly what you would choose for a magazine photograph, but children remember having bedrooms that felt like their own.

Let him choose between two bedding options.

Ask which wall art he likes.

Let him decide where his trophies go.

Let him put his favorite football on the shelf.

Give him a place for whatever strange treasure he currently loves.

You can still guide the overall look while allowing his personality to show through.

Don’t Be Afraid of an Actual Theme

There is so much advice now about creating sophisticated children’s rooms that sometimes we forget one important thing:

Children are children.

If your eight-year-old thinks a football-shaped rug is the greatest piece of home decor ever created, put the football rug in his bedroom.

There will be plenty of years for sophisticated rugs.

Childhood bedrooms should have a little bit of magic and fun in them.

Then suddenly his walls may be covered in posters of bands you have never heard of.

The furniture doesn’t have to change every time he does.
